Commute Stories: Edward Paul Libassi

Edward Paul Libassi (Investigator, Investigations Unit, Columbia University Public Safety) commutes via Columbia shuttle from Lamont Observatory to the Morningside Campus.

Edward started his shuttle commute in November 2022. He says he enjoys the consistent commute and that it fits well in his everyday routine.

"I've been using this service for over a year. It's transformed my daily travel," Edward comments on the Lamont-Doherty Shuttle Park & Ride program. "Avoiding the George Washington Bridge toll and saving on gas significantly reduces my commuting costs."

The Lamont-Doherty Shuttle Park & Ride program is a commuting solution offered by Columbia University as part of its commitment to reducing carbon emissions under Plan 2030. Participants pay a nominal fee to park their vehicles at the Observatory, then board the free shuttle, which passes over the picturesque George Washington Bridge to reach designated stops at the Manhattanville and Morningside campuses. This program is reducing Columbia’s carbon emissions while easing traffic congestion and fostering commuting solutions to its local community. This program supports the University's commitment to adopt safe and sustainable mobility options that lead by example and contribute to the livability of NYC.

Edward, a member of the Investigations Unit of Public Safety at Columbia University, resides in Rockland County and highly values the shuttle service for his daily commute to Columbia. Previously enduring a drive that took 45-60 minutes to the Morningside campus, he now enjoys a much more efficient 20-minute drive to the Observatory, followed by a 30 min shuttle ride where he can relax and enjoy the view.

Edward, who commutes to the campus four days a week, appreciates the shuttle's consistency and reliability. "It's a vital part of my routine," he says. "And it aligns with Columbia's sustainability goals by promoting shared transportation, which is crucial in our collective effort to reduce car usage and foster environmental awareness."

While he notes the challenge of limited parking at Lamont, Edward praises the program's management and inclusivity. "The friendly bus drivers and punctual service contribute to my routine in a meaningful way."

Edward's experience with the Lamont-Doherty Shuttle Park & Ride program highlights a sustainable, stress-free commuting alternative, echoing the University's Plan 2030.
