Getting to Columbia
New York City is rapidly expanding its bike-ability. In 2015, NYC reached over 1,000 miles of bike lanes. New York City doubled bicycle commuting between 2007 and 2011, and aims to triple it by 2017. At Columbia, with over 1,000 bike commuters, bike commuting has more than doubled since 2004. The growing bike culture and bike lane network is a move towards safer streets and increased transportation options.

Getting there by bike is usually faster, healthier, and way more fun. By bike it takes about:
- 4 minutes to bike 10 blocks
- 42 minutes to bike between Battery Park and Morningside along the car-free, Hudson River Greenway. Map route
- 21 minutes to bike between Morningside and CUMC, via the car-free, Hudson River Greenway. Map route
- 15 minutes to bike between the Upper East Side and Morningside. Map route
- 14 minutes to bike between Fort Lee, NJ, and Medical Center via the G. Washington Bridge bike route. Map route

Get to your destination faster when you combine your transit trip with a bike ride. Most people walk to the train station. Experiment with biking to the station, and locking your bike at the station, or taking it with you.
Hudson River Greenway
Free from cars and close to Columbia’s Manhattan campuses is the Hudson River Greenway trail, located along the western edge of Manhattan along the banks of the Hudson River. From Canada to Key West, the Hudson River Greenway is the I-95 for bicycles! This bicycle and walking trail is part of the 2,900-mile long East Coast Greenway that stretches from the Canadian border in Maine to Key West, Florida.
Bikes on Transit
Cycling to and from the train station is usually a faster way to travel. Bicycles are permitted on all NYC subways and all Columbia shuttles. However, bikes are not permitted on most NYC transit buses, with the exception of folding bikes.
The Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad have a one-time $5 permit that allows its riders to bring their bicycle onboard.
Bikes on Columbia Shuttles
As a cyclist, sometimes you need a lift. Bikes can be transported on all Columbia buses. When traveling with a bike on one of Columbia’s coach buses, notify the driver and they’ll help you load your bike into the luggage compartment.
For traveling with your bike on the Intercampus Shuttle, follow these instructions on using the self-loading bike rack.
Loading Your Bike
- As the bus approaches have your bike ready to load; remove loose items and accessories before placing bike on exterior rack.
- Always approach bus from the curb side.
- Tell the bus driver that you are loading a bike.
- Squeeze rack handle and lower rack to release the folded bike rack.
- Raise and release the support arm over the front tire. Make sure the support arm is open and secured over front fender of front tire.
- Sit near the front of the bus and keep an eye on your bike.
Unloading Your Bike
- Tell the driver that you need to unload your bike.
- Raise support arm off the tire, move the support arm down and out of the way.
- Lift bike off the rack.
- Return bike rack to folded position.
Get places faster with a folding bike. The folding bicycle is designed to combine biking with your transit and walking commute. They generally weigh about 30 pounds and costs start at $200. Folding bikes can be purchased online or in stores.
